yeah, this is slightly backwards seeing as all the planning came right at the very end. this is another illustration for the student paper but instead of going with an articlw, this is going to be accompanying a poem. it's a rather noir-ish take on wayward partners. if i'd had more time, i would have done something far more atmospheric and detailed since it totally deserved it.
much prefer the tighter crop. with the focus on her smile and the eyes obscured, she hopfully comes off as waaaaaay colder. not sure if the tiny finger prints come off clearly though- wanted a visual that would be associated with the crime genra but maybe they're too small? all the more reason to go with the tighter crop.
holy moly. did someone order an extra order of THIGHS?

more stuff for the student journal, this time for an article about a tone deaf girl who was duped into thinking she was the next maria callis.
eh, not sure if her inability to hit a note comes through here. should have done something to make the stanza in the back ground more painful/aggressive/dischorded.
last post i was waxing on about gabriel ba. he and his brother are a super talented pair. please, check them out -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/10paezinhos/sets/72157606185530624/

and speaking of ripping things off...
i tottally gorged on gabriel ba with a back to back reading of the umbrella acadamy and cassanova TPBs. my god, that man can draw the the shit out of a comic.
but yeah, it's lead to me starting up my milk tost imperssination of him again with this illustration for the student paper. i didn't get a chance to read the article which was super crap on my part but i think it's about students sneaking into high-society events. uuuugh, this was done very late at night with very little planning and thought. i have no idea how they're going to fit it into the page. the paper's only a5 but this thing's got akward dimensions so it's probably going to be super tiny.
...
WELL DONE YOU.
artistic angst asides, may i present to you a super awsome trailer:
oh HELLS yes.

do over of the refugee illustration for folio although elen seemed to prefer the more emo-tastic version. i guess i wanted to try something a little more design based rather than literal... for which i totally blame the graphic genius of chris ware.
christ... those blank, soulless eyes are actually a little creepy.

*GASP* what!? moar throat slitting art?!? how utterly delightful!
but yeah, illustration for an article on refugees. this was going to be a whole lot more ambitious, shot at an angle with a tone of hands clutching at the fence but then 1. there's not a whole lotta space for the illustrations so the tiny reproduction would most likely be unreadable and 2. there was a little matter of meeting the deadline.
BLEGH!

on the topic of emo-tastic, here be the second folio cover. this term's theme is sanctuary...
...
...
rrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiight. you were bang on the money with this one. totally should have gone with the holding house idea but nooooooooooooo, someone wanted to be all artistic and abstract.
... i'm guessing i can't really get away with blaming this debacle on listening to too much 'my body is a cadge' by the lovely arcade fire, right?

brain storming for issue #2 of folio. ramblings leftover from an email.
#1- basically, i couldn't come up with j/s at first so i thought i'd milk the net idea for all it's worth. gimmicky, but not thematically accurate.
2#- wooooooow, shitty drawing. basically, the idea was to have this little homely house amidst this sprawl of faceless tower blocks. kinda like it and i swear to god i can actually draw buildings from above (...most of the time).
3#- go figure.
4#- bwuah? man sitting inside an alcove in someone's chest? i was trying to play around with the whole 'home is where the heart is mantra but i think i took it a little too surreal-y.
5#- unlike here. where there's a little house shaped hole where little miss emo's heart should be. like the idea, but would draw it differently; at the moment, that pen sketch smacks of meh.
colour? lol, whutz that?

Dear Alex Moore,
There is a fine line between homage and blatantly ripping something off. I thought I made my feelings clear when I brought your aping of Ba's style to your attention, however now i find you trying doing the exact same thing with bentteo. You really are quite shameless, you know.
Yours sincerely,
Your Artistic Integrity.
aaaand finally the cover for the student journal/paper. the theme was reconnecting and this idea seemed to go down the best with people. best to try and ignore the chick's freaky-deaky arm though, amiright?

never a frow with gordon brown!
i cannot draw our priminister. also, elen raised a very good point when she said 'isn't obama ment to be black?'
....
....
GOOD JOB!
the final for an article about where relations between the usa and uk are going. if you just happen to be in oxford, the journal should be hitting shelves in four weeks or something.
exciting!
