last week was not a good week for art.

so you know how the last month or so has been spent working on comics? well, turns out someone made a little faux pas when it came to converting inches to cms.

whoops.

so much for those finals you, did huh?fortunately i'd mostly been working on roughs and thumbnails, but it was still a kick in the teeth. OH WELL. YOU CAN DO IT BETTER THIS TIME ROUND.

but you didn't come here to listen to me bitch and moan! here's some stuff from the BIG project.

super vague head sketches. just to get a feel of who's who.

not so vague character sketches. note- sadly there are no echidna's in this book.

a page that can no longer be used due to the aforementioned case of ruler retardation. it's probably for the best. there are some really whack straight lines in there.

_ _ _

in other news, have you ever wondered what the bastard love child of philip glass and a bass sax would sound like? i wager a pretty penny it would go a little something like this:

WOW. note to self. buy the fuck out of this album. i was listening to an interveiw with this guy on Q (canadian radio is pretty rad, guys). stetson (who's played with a ton of bands, including arcade fire) was saying how he has the whole room mice so _all_ the sounds the saxophone makes are picked up. what blows my mind id that he does what he does without a loop machine. or his lungs exploding.

oh the liberty. i really should be working on you ever waking moment but i'm totally blowing you off this month. i should also probably be reading up for the dissitation right now instead of pottering around on blogger.

OH GUILT. HOW YOU GNAW AND GNAW AND GNAW AND GNAW.

i am so happy whenever the air ship docks come up in this book. sure, it means the pages take like 9 million years to draw but whatever, stella.

in other news, when i grow up, i would very much like to be this lady:

this song/video combo is utterly exquisite. came its way after listening to EPISODE 2 OF THE MAKING IT PODCAST over at the nerdist. i would recommend it if you like stories about creative people prevailing. just... try not to rip out your ears when the glee-tastic theme song kicks in....

stuff from the last batch of liberty pages. now with at least 100% more gonnahavetachokeabitch action.

here's a great little blog post from sam macleod examining shot progression through a scene and how it can play into characterisation. you should check out the rest of his blog to boot. man does some FANTASTIC watercolour studies.

stuff from the book WHICH WE'RE NOW A QUATER OF THE WAY THROUGH. AW-FUCKING-YEEEEEEAAAAAAAH.

what's a better way to celebrate than with some beatboxing fish?

a big old sploge of work stuff. mysterious, out-of-context boxes! what secrets do you hold??
...
i guess you'll have to wait till it's done till you find that one out.

ANYWAYS, remember that totally heart warming story about the time they let us paint the university red (and black and blue and yellow and any other colour we thought to bring with us)? well, turns out some genius in management decided that it was ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to white wash the place the next day. even though they're demolishing the site pretty much right now...

wack.

oh well, at least we'll always have the photos on facebook.

p.s watched this superbly put together documentary about rand-inism and how it tied into the economic meltdown. you should give it a go. it's TOTALLY facinating:

work and HEY DUMBASS! WHERE THE WORD BALLONS GONNA GO?!?

on a totally unrelated point, i needed to learn how to do this like 5 minuets ago:

WALK OF SHAME! actually, that's wholly appropriate seeing as i only managed to get a shocking 2 PAGES done this week. poor form, moore.

IN OTHER OLD, OUTDATED NEWS:

so a while back, we went to the macmillan book prize show. as mentioned before, HECTOR got his ass shortlisted which is totally awesome. speaking of awesome, some of the other entries on show at that thing were absolutely mind-bending. it's a shame the macmillan website has ABSOLUTELY NO COVERAGE OF THIS COMPETITION WHATSOEVER since this stuff totally deserves to be seen.

being anal, i did some rooting around and found some websites you should most definitely check out:

reference doodles for the book some of these are very, very old but HOLY SHIT. IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE WORKING ON THIS THING AGAIN.

plan is to try and blitz the crap out of it before it's back to uni time. probably not going to happen but we can always dream, AMIRITE?

peek at the liberty. fingers crossed, there's going to be a window open to work on this before the middle of march. the thought of having a chunk of time to work on this has got me buzzing like you wouldn't believe.

OH HAI! i can't remember if i plugged this here or not, but the issue of FTL that has the story that jordan and i worked on is available to buy in both digital and organic formats. BOYAH! you can nab it here if you feel so inclined -> http://www.comicbitsonline.com/2011/01/24/ftl-5-from-orang-utan-comics/

17/104. my, we're longing this out just a little bit, aren't we?

*POKE*

sneaky peek at a page from the liberty. man, i think woking on 'act-y' bits like this is probably my favourite part of this whole shebang.

lo, the lovely cut 'n paste action in that bottom panel.

Monday, 27 December 2010

BUT WHERE IS THE TENSION? I WANTED YOU TO _FEEL_ LIKE YOU COULD _CUT_ CHEESE WITH THAT STRING selfloathingartist#

WOOP WOOP! bad story telling alert. that weird box thing in the bottom left hand corner is meant to be a carriage and not just some random polygon hanging out in old pseudo-victorian london. should have made that clear since it's pretty {SPOILER ALERT} prominent in the next panel.

LAMBASTING FOR LEARNING, YO!

page 13... we are inching towards victory, people.

Sunday, 21 November 2010

panel from the liberty. oh god. i am so far behind on this. so so far behind. totally though i was going to get a chance to get another page done and dusted this weekend, but then surprise deadline came along and gave those plans the finger. sonovabitch.

design stuff for the graphic novel.

speaking of comic book things, both issues of turning tiger are now up on graphic.ly! you can get your mitts on them by way of -> http://renegadeartsentertainment.com/titles/turning-tiger . dude. there aren't enough crayons in the box to colour me excited. working with richmond and alexander was such a frigging blast.

pannel from the liberty. oh my. i have done a spectacularly shit job of keeping on top of this now we're back at uni. looks like this weekend is being spent in total lock down and repenting for my sins of piss poor time management.

WHOA CARIBOU. YOU JUST UP-ED THE FUNK.

Thursday, 7 October 2010

(panel from the graphic novel. featuring old school email. we are throwing historical accuracy to the wind, people.)

Monday, 20 September 2010

panel from the graphic novel. i thought this one was going to kick my ass (funky architecture and 3 point perspective are two great tastes that taste like ass together) but i think the tables may have been turned... well, maybe just a little bit. i don't know, i'm still in the hazy, post finished glow where i think everything's the absolute jam. ten bucks says i look at this thing tomorrow and think it's the shit. and not in the awesome sense.

PEACE!

moar liberty stuff. ugh. feeling so groggy when i drew these two up and BOY does it show. stiff stiff stiff. damn you, fun and beer, damn you.

notes- remember thomas' gloves and john's holster is of the shoulder variety.
