coloured pages from the self initiated. i thought i was going to get 24 of these licked. i did 5. ah well, win some-lose some, right?

it's a bugger though. moseying through SKOTTIE YOUNG'S totally badass blog (speaking of, why are you still here and not checking that shit out? it's HOT!), i came across this pearl of wisdom: that you draw things differently depending on how you're planning to colour them.

this kinda sorta totally blew my mind.

i guess before this, i'd put ALL the emphasis on the drawing and left colouring as an after thought. but thinking backwards like this could lead to such richer results. take water colours- you can actually do so much of the form building with them rather than over-saturating a picture with too many lines. this is something i deffinatly need to remember; such an anal control freak when it comes to drawing and OH MY GOD, THIS IS SO BORING. HERE'S A PHOTO OF SOMETHING FUN INSTEAD.

so yes. the last couple of pages for the self initiated. ah well, at least i pleasantly surprised myself with how quickly i could actually draw a comic page when i has to, RIGHT?

unfortunately, this speedy clip doesn't seem to have carried over to work-work. a boo-hoo-hoo.

in other news, totally impulse-bought seabear's 'the ghost that carried us away' and it single handedly restored my faith in blindly throwing money at albums.

on the upside though, there's been a whole lot more of this in our lives as of late:

ugh. now it's all said and done, totally not happy with how i went about this. as tutor man said, i was waaaaaaaay too focused on trying to cover as much ground as humanly possible instead of aiming for a smaller target and making something that was far, far tighter.

frustration.

i don't know, if there's a chance this summer, i'd really like to take another crack at this, but treat it a bit more like a picture book. eric's writing is totally shwaay anyway and doesn't need to be rail-roaded by mediochar art AND OH MY, ARNE'T WE BEING QUITE THE LITTLE SELF PITYING ARTIST TODAY.

in other news, they are letting us draw ALL OVER our campus as part of the little send off party. i am alex's overwhelming, quivering excitement.

more early stage stuff from the self initiated. gah, i have totally been neglecting this in favour of trying to put the macmillan to bed. this will undoutably going to be payed for in spades further down the road.

in other news, one of my friend's managed to land a gig illustrating an interactive game for the guerilla dance project. it was part of the last 'late at the V&A' event which is so freaking cool so hats off to abi (who's blog you can check out here. she's a total ace with collage and watercolours, but will deny it vehemently).

first lot of pages from the self initiated project, a.k.a tekeshi's castle isn't as challenging as this.

i don't know, there's a ton of things i want to try and deal with with this.

• first off, the whole thing's going to be totally hand made. i've become WAAAAAY too reliant on photoshop when it comes to colouring. time to grow some balls and do some water colouring.
•painfully slow work rate. recently, it's been taking me FOREVER to make even baby steps on the liberty. we've only got about 6 weeks for this project so i'm totally going to have to pick up the pace if i want to get all 24 pages drawn, coloured and lettered.
•quit being so damn 'DUHRRR LOOK AT ME DRAWING'. this has been a recurring criticism from my totally awesome tutors over the last two years. i'd over-draw a frigging line if you let me. hopefully with this, most of the work's going to be in the colour. this is partly because when i grow up, i would quite like to be gipi : http://giannigipi.blogspot.com/

four weeks to go. got two more pages to lay out and 13 drawn. this could quite possibly be doable.

some character design stuff for the self initiated. phone lady is essentially somewhere between the twin peaks' log lady and velma from scoobie doo.

...she is also quite possibly me in 10 years time.

throwing this up because i totally can't deal with cross referencing between 12 million bits of paper right now.

just a quick style test for the self initiated project. more on that soon- i'm just throwing it up now because i need a reminder about not being totally tight and anal (WOW, what a terrible paring of words) about the inking.

he writes. i draw. we figured... comic? been working on converting his story into a script. hopefully be able to get cracking on actual pages some time soon.
