doodle-caboodling! so this time round, the theme's 'pictorial charades'. think i may have put this one forward only because of my massive, drippy love for all forms of word play.

two words, it's a band.

but seriously, check out that blog. folk have been submitting some well jammy stuff.

pencils for a little something for that doodle caboodle thing we do. man. that moment right before you start laying down watercolours on a drawing is always so very, very terrifying.

while we're on the subject of things in circles;

BITCH DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT DESIGN, YO.

in other news, here's a fine podcast from the folk over at books you should read discussing books and their film adaptations. god damn. jaws the novel sounds AMAZINGLY awful.

MORE FACIAL HAIR RELATED SILLINESS FOR THE DOODLE CABOODLE!

i freaking love train journeys. they are the perfect excuse to draw inane nonsense like this.

OH HAI! MOAR RANDOM HEADS!
something for our GROUP BLOG. the current theme's facial hair... and somehow you got lumber-wolf man-jack from that? i don't know. lumberjacks are the most viral, manly thing out there, right? and viral, manly things tend to be hairy (chuck norris, case in point) so this totally makes sense. yes.

HORRENDOUSLY OUTDATED THINGS FROM THE INTERNET TIME!

this thing exploded all over the internet like a year ago, so chances are you've probably already seen it. but for the uninitiated, a while back this dude released a series of videos critting the star wars prequels. yeah, i know that horse has been flogged to the point that it's nothing more than a rancid soup, but this guy takes them apart to a level that is MOLECULAR and shows off just how badly put together these movies are. they're also a total hoot if burying ladies of the night in your backyard is the kind of thing that tickles your fancy. ENJOY!

for the group blog, DOODLE CABOODLE. the topic this time round was 'dream', which seemed like the perfect excuse to draw semi-submerged-bald-statue-men andOH HAI I THINK I SEE A MOTIF APPEARING. LOL WUT A HACK.

aaaaand in the spirit of blogging about things waaaaaaaaaaaay past the fresh news expiry date, this happened:

so a while back ben folds, amanda palmer, neil gaiman, and damian kulash (of ok go) got together and decided to collaborate on album as part of the ReThink music conference. they gave themselves eight hours to put it together from scratch. and all the tracks were going to be based on suggestions from twitter.
...
HOLY MOLY, THAT'S BALLSY. but in the end, they got a totally fun package out of it. check it!

for our group blog,THE DOODLE CABOODLE. theme this time round was "If one of my bodyparts was a ______". this one's for you, twat-tastic MC. a while back, we went up to oxford for the vaudeville rave. the music was totally aces and everyone (bar us) was fabulously dressed. but the guy running the show. oh my god. everything he said took like 9,000 HOURS because each sentence had to be punctuated with a flurry of noises that sounded like android hell.

it was... mildly frustrating.

p.s while i like to look all sophisticated and intellectual posting links to ted lectures and documentaries about economic meltdowns, my real bread and butter is super dorky podcasts about THE nerdiest shit you can imagine. the NERDIST PODCAST is one such show. but oh my god, this thing is hilarious.

for our group blog. this week's theme was black and white. for some reason, gnarly monsters seemed to be the OBVIOUS thing to do.

speaking of gnarly monsters, i know i'm totally late to this but oh my god. the video for MGMT's kids is the most glorious, freaky shit.

we were in a totally cheesy club last night, and suddenly this thing comes on the screen that's like the bastard love child of labyrinth and john carpenter's the thing. it was kinda amazing.

so last year we started up a sketch blog. it was good fun. but then second year happened and it became one sad, neglected puppy. now that we're off though, we're going to resurrect its ass.

them this time round is "NOW UNI'S DONE, I'M GOING TO_______". yeah. i'mma going to be hanging out with my drawing table. a lot.

(but i love it really)

there are like twelfty million things in my head i want to draw. this is one of those rare occasions where i just said fuck it and took a little time out to pin one down on paper.

of course, i had to convince myself it would be halfway appropriate for a past doodle caboodle theme to work up the gumption to take a break from work and do it. oh god. i think my neurosis may have totally choked out my ability to draw for just the hell of it....

ah well, i'm just waiting till the ideas section of my grey matter hits critical mass and you all get sucked into the gaping black hole where my head used to be.

(p.s. why does his ass look like it's pressed up against something when he's in a bottomless tub? ART FAIL.)

for the song theme over at zee doodle caboodle blog. i am going to beat that dead horse to oblivion and beyond. for florence + the machine's bird song. why that track isn't on the main album is beyond me. this song is beyond fabulous.

huh. i don't know where her clothes went either.

took some time out the other morning to do something for our doodle caboodle blog because i'd just got back from bestival the night before and acctual work was totally beyond me.

(this is like the easiest where's wally ever)

oh my god. that festival fragged me, BUT IN THE MOST AWESOME WAY. please, for the love of all things holy, go next year. i've been to reading and t but this was a totally different kettle of fish. so much crazy cool stuff going on in the periphery and even though we didn't catch a whole load of band, it didn't feel like ticket money went down the drain.

in conclusion, rating: FANTABULOUSE.

poor doodle caboodle. how neglected have you been! need to get back on board with that shit... in the mean time though, here's an offering for the portrait topic.

i figured it was way too serious though.

for the doodle caboodle song theme. eugh. i think my scanner's allergic to colour and my photoshop-fu's a bit too weak to rectify it's misdermeners. grr

anyhoo, the song this time round it v v brown's shark in the water. i caught her at t in the park last year and she put on a super fun show.

for our joint blog, the doodle caboodle (http://thedoodlecaboodle.blogspot.com/). the theme for this was dental trauma. i had braces for like, 50 years back in the day. those days are not looked back on fondly.

so you know how in the last post i was all like 'bitch is going to get this shit down today, yo.' well... that was a half truth. i got the anthology story licked (AAAAAWWWWWW YYYYEEEEAAAHHHH!) but the mole skin got totally blown off. there was a reason that happened though. turns out comic book artists/raconteur aficionados gabriel ba and fabio moon are in london for the brazil/ literary festival down at the southbank centre. for part of it, they put together this GIGANTIC mural and there was an open invite for people to come along and help out.

holy. shit. these guys are like two of my art heroes and have had a massive impact on me. i am _so_ glad i caught this and got to take part.

here are some photos. there will most likely be more. my god, it was hot.

for our group blog, http://thedoodlecaboodle.blogspot.com/.

aw man, have i been BUSY BUSY BUSY lately. i'm juggling a ton of stuff at the moment but some of it's wrapping up so hopefully i can go back to spamming the crap out of this thing sometime soon. in the mean time though, enjoy this public health announcement. this is totally self serving since i utterly suck at this particular department of dental hygiene and am super parinoid that it will be the mushy, sticky, plaque-ridden downfall of my pearly whites.

yeah. that TOTALLY won't have AAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYTTTTTHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG to do with the gallons of diet coke i drink.

DENAIL AIN'T JUST A RIVER IN EYGPT, HONEY.

my body is a cage- arcade fire

so flavour of the month over at doodle caboodle (http://thedoodlecaboodle.blogspot.com/) is songs. there's like 9.2 billion things i'd like to draw for this but there's never going to be enough time. sad face. was listening to arcade fire's my body is a cage and this rather emo-tastic image popped into my head.

it's meant to be a dude trapped under a film of skin but... eh. the hands lack anything close to conviction. a booooooooo. lesson learnt? alway, always, ALWAYS draw that shit out on paper first. you have a fantastic tendency to forget how shit works once you boot up painter.

MUSIC!

this isn't one of my favourite songs of theirs but god damn, these guys know how to write a tune. they also hit my weak point for big ensemble pieces with lots of strings and horns for super massive damage. aren't they currently working on a project with spike jonez? oh my god, that shit is going to be tight.

NOW WITH 100% MORE COLOUR!

god, i freaking love big, fuck off clouds. skimming through the article on wikipedia and they have some _fantastic_ pictures. for some reason i keep on drawing these pseudo cumulus-whatever but there are so many interesting types out there. VERIATY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE!

coloured with the forbidden program. i think i'm falling back in love with it...

Sunday, 30 May 2010

current theme for the doodle caboodle is fantastic machines. gah, haven't had much time to spare so i took forever to actually get around to doing anything for it... and in the end, all i've got to show for myself is a poor man's rocketeer...

OH WELL, WHAT THE HELL.

going to slap so colours on this sometime soon so watch this space. got five million other things i want to do for this and all the other topics but goddamn, there are never going to be enough hours in the day.

stuff for the doodle caboodle. when i grow up, i would very much like to be shit hot at the ukulele. i'm pretty musically challenged though so it's probably never going to happen.

drew this one while listening to kings of leon's king of the rodeo and the bucket. ALOT.

man, those are some super fun songs. the picture was done was done with sharpened coffee stirrers. i'm a bit shit at playing with line texture and the stuff i do with pens always ends up looking super duper clean (BOOOOOORRRRRRIIIINNNNNGGGG). note to self: think about experimenting with brush pens (looking at fabio moon and francis manapul's stuff always gets me super psyched about dabbling with those things. GO CHECK THOSE CATS OUT. THEY'RE PRETTY SICK).

OH GOD! I LOVE UKULELES.

something for our group art blog, the doodle caboodle ( http://thedoodlecaboodle.blogspot.com/ ). you should check it out! some people are doing some super fly stuff for it. if you'd like to become a contributor, just give me a shout and i'll add you as a contributor. the more the merrier!

for the 'when i grow up, i want to be a _________' theme. yeah... i put ALOT of imagination into this one.
