alas, my piss-poor mastery of straight lines makes gloriously OTT buildings like this nigh on impossible to draw. i'll second that, gloomy statue.

making a point of going through the moleskin and polishing up some of the more half-hearted scribbles in there at the moment. my god. so many half formed brain farts.

stuff from way back when they took us to new york. i'm thinking of stating up a new section on this thing wholly devoted to the strange folk you see on public transport.

god, that reflection in the floor idea haunted me something awful. totally a case of thinking an idea is super pimp and being waaaaaaaaay too stubborn to see that actually, it sucks balls. i've got a tighter version sitting on my desktop that i've been meaning to finish but fuck that. it's going on a one way trip to the trash right.... NOW!

shame on me. i wasted a good chunk of this afternoon tarting things up in my sketchbook instead of tackling the mountain of uni/work work i absolutely had to get done five minuets ago. a-booooooooooooooooooooooo.

more new york stuff. god, watching that man do 5,000 pull ups while i sat there eating my body weight in orgasmically lush french toast was depressing.

ancient history from the new york editorial project. oh my god, the paper in my sketch book doesn't know how to take watercolours.

one thing they really pushed in this project was thumbnailing. god, it's crazy just how far away you can sometimes find yourself from your original idea.

the phillips tv people recently released a bunch of short films they commissioned to show of their shiny backlight feature or whatever. i think the directors were given free reign over what they came up with, as long as the short featured the line 'it's a unicorn'. haven't checked out the others yet, but this is pretty badass. so much so that warner brothers and fox are in a bidding war to turn it into a full length feature. huzzarh!

more stuff from new york. for the love of god, don't litter if you find yourself there. some dude tossed a wrapper and ended up being chased down the street by this woman who sounded like she'd swallowed a fog-horn.

most intense man was most intense. we clocked him while in line for the ellis island ferry (oh, we were delightfully touristy). the dude was about three times taller than everyone else there and spent the whole time staring off into space not blinking. it was mildly terrifying.

also making a guest appearance are matt and helen (she likes cake).

cover spread for the new york editorial project.

this one was a lot of fun. the article we were illustrating had a really weird angle. our besotted protagonist spent most of it trying to get through administration and red tape to get an interview with new york herself. when he finally gets to talk to her, he realises that she's transformed into a cold hearted, man-eater of a monster monster (or maybe she always was and he had the rose tinted glasses on a wee bit too tight). with this, i wanted to try and get down the apprehension he develops towards her while depicting her as this soulless seductress and good lord this is getting wanky.

and it sounds like our mysterious neighbour who just moved in next door has got himself a piano. he's pretty good.

in other news, went to see the tigerlillies last week.

FUCK ME, THEY'RE GOOD.

we totally went on impulse and bought tickets at the last minuet. i'm still pretty amazed we managed to land any since that was supposedly their only london show this year. it was kinda like what would happen if the league of gentlemen folk decided to to turn their hand to writing macabre cabaret-style show tunes complete with theramins, musical saws and wonderfully shit panto-esque antics.

...eww. tarting this one up did it no favours whatsoever and the colouring itself is pretty slap-dash. need to start thinking about doing colour studies before blundering into these things. who knows, they could be the best friend you never knew you had.

the article was all about this guy coming back to new york and realising that it maaaaaaaaybe wasn't the city he fell in love with all those years ago. i thought it might be fun to set it up as the guy getting increasingly more disillusioned as he's stood up on a series of dates. tutor pointed out that it looked a little too comic-booky though and i'm not going to argue. that is a trap that needs to be avoided.

it's pretty cool underneath the brooklyn bridge. the whole thing seems to have been converted into one big o'l skate park and when we went, there were some folks trying to do what looked like an impromptu fashion shoot. i would have doodled/snapped it but people were getting pretty naked.

stuff from new york. we'd just stumbled off the plane when these were done so these are pretty.... loose. it was also trying it's darndest to rain which resulted in some pretty funky bleeding on the page.

that city always seems to have super fun ad campaigns going on. last time i went, the place was plastered with all those viral posters for true blood advocating equal rights for vampires. this time round there were all these bills that seemed to be pimping some help line for zombies, werewolves and all sorts of other nasties that go bump in the night which was super niffty.

god, that place is tall.
