more do overs in the key of flat colours and cheeky filters:
(closer look. because for some reason blogger's being lame and not allowing for full image view size. boooo on you blogger. boo on you.)
man. that psycho poster was pretty weak sauce in the first place but i'm not too sure if this is any better. a bit too much all over the place perhaps? (and not an ounce of good composition to be found!)
oh well. TOO LATE NOW SON.
pretty much ripped wholesale by this scene:
ggggooooodddd. this film is so good.
aaaaaaaaaand speaking of redos, someone decided to translate radiohead's ok computer into 8-bit. the results are totally jammy. give it a twirl!

so the hitchcock poster project got wrapped up a while ago. hurrah! would have posted it here soon but i've been scrambling to get on top of all the other work (least of all the disastertation draft that needs to be in for uncomfortably soon) to acctually get around to doing that. boo!
but oh well, here they are in all their updated glory(?)

(according to the back of the dvd, THAT shower scene took seven days and ten as many cameras to shoot. c-r-a-z-y. also, hitchcock totally poo-pooed the piece of music (you know the one) that bernard herrmann penned to accompany it and didn't want it in the film. fortunatly, hitchcock went off on holiday and herrman slipped it into the final cut. TRUE STORY.
aaaaaaand these old bits of news- NOW WITH ADDED SHITTY TYPOGRAPHY! AWWW YEAH!

was debating adding colour but i don't know... kinda like the black and white. what do you think?

a little work in progress. the (still unfinished) brighton rock comic project was getting dangerously close to turning me into a full blown manic depressant... so i opted to do the sensible thing AND TOTALLY BLOW IT OFF. NYAH!
in the mean time i thought i'd try and totally blitz one of the smaller projects so i've, you know, actually got something finished. so yeah, hitchcock posters. so far this has been a blast, AND an excellent excuse to watch some totally ace films. got to design four of these using three colours. once i've got the lot of them drawn out, i'm going to start twiddling with the pallet and lettering but so far we've got:
north by north west

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lifa3aEBEfM
and the birds

god, this SCENE. shit's so tense. this film also makes me totally take back all the smack i may have said about hitchcock tending to screw the ending after watching psycho and nxnw. what a totally creepy last shot.
aaaand now all the unrelated crap;
sketchbook junk:

a totally rad episode of the nerdist podcast with penn jillette. hot dog. this guy is just a fountain of great stories.

AND DONE!
well, that's one thing off the never ending list of to-do. also, this taught me an awful lot about creating filters/colour tweaking with photoshop. god damn. that program is so smart.
went on a total ted binge yesterday. here are some highlights;
hans rosling on the growth trends in the spread of aids.
aaaaand julia sweeny on her religious convictions
that second one's a total ace bit of storytelling. i could seriously listen to sweeney read the phone book all day long.

pencils for the poster. man, the first crack at this was a total disaster. the composition was super dull and it wasn't drawn with any real idea of how it was going to be coloured. i've come to realise that this is just a really good way to shoot yourself in the foot.
PLAN THAT SHIT OUT, YO.
thought it could all be magically turned around in photoshop. ah ha. i don't need kevin spacey to tell me how wrong i was on that one. still. lesson learnt so it's all good, right?
and here's milton glaser (designer of the i heart new york design) on the fear of failure;
Milton Glaser – on the fear of failure. from Berghs' Exhibition '11 on Vimeo.
it's a pretty enlightening seven minuets. but shit, dog. could they have chosen a more terrifying still for the preview image?

pencils for the poster. mmmmmaaaybe got a little carried away with the drawing on this one since this is going to get buried under like a bajillion layers in photoshop.
OH WELL.
oh hey, want to get your mind totally blown? then check THIS DUDE. i acctually can't get enough of his wonderful stuff... AND HE'S 16 YEARS OLD.
...
SIX. FREAKING.TEEN
oh my stars and garters. he's got such a handle on form and character, it's nuts. dude's already interning at disney. i think he's going to take over the world.

poster for meow magazine. this month, the good folk running it have set 'idols' as the theme. this should be a fun one!
totally took this as an excuse to play around with the halftone setting in photoshop. i'd really like to try it with screen printing but there's some big, long, complicated formula that comes with that territory and scares the crap out of me.

i... have no idea what's going on with this project. apparantly one of the people on the comittee asked for a new version of the poster without running it past anyone else. blew an afternoon on it, but it looks like people prefered the red and yellow version you can find floating around here.
well, whatever. need to find out what the fuck's going on though because boss man's dropped out of the kerfuffle compleatly.
good for him i say.
in the mean time though, enjoy this slightly more official looking update.

mmm, slightly less scrappy than the last version, no?
boss man had a meeting with the warwick castle people and they seem to want to use this which is very, VERY exciting. there are a couple of things that need tweaking (shockingly shite castle, i'm looking at you) and obviously there's going to be some more text but who knows, you might see this floating round london come autumn.
wow, does the border make anyone else think national geographic?

my boss is so very awesome. he might have possibly got me a gig doing the poster for this event going on at warrick castle. it's either the celebrations of some big birthday of henry viii or the production the fencing academy's putting on for their bicentennial- i'm not sure...
anyhoo, they needed an idea of the color scheme so here's a rather gross thumbnail i sent them. for some reason they seemed to actually like it.
did you know in his younger days, Henry enjoyed playing a sport called REAL tennis? also, Edward wasn't his only son- he had another, illegitimate son called henry fitzroy. Henry made steps to name him heir but never went through with it. fitzroy's death by TB might have also had something to do with that.
#THE MORE YOU KNOW!#

so yeah, initially i had an idea to illustrate mrs o by the dresden dolls with a pseudo war time propaganda poster thing (kinda fits the themes of the song. i think it's all about how we're so very good at pulling the wool over our eyes in light of human atrocities, particularly those committed in times of war [/] pretentious babble).
one of the camberwell tutors was all like 'think bigger' and came up with the idea of USING the poster rather than just making an image which seemed pretty cool and progressive (... for me) so ben and i are off tomorrow to take pictures. fun times.
in retrospective, choosing to go with the hairdryer line was a poor choice.
coincidentally, HOW MUCH FUN IS SUPER SCULPY!?
