lo! hilariously inaccurate reproductions of famous moscownian landmarks!

pencils for the super massive russia drawing. hopfully going to get the majority of the colours done this afternoon.

perspective's so much more fun when you just throw it out the window.

and that's all for the life drawing book! golly gee, wasn't that fun, kids? mmm, drawing on wood is so much fun. you can get really drippy and wet with that stuff and it doesn't even bat an eye. i think paper would nigh on disintegrate if you tried to slap that much ubber diluted ink on it...

current theme for the doodle caboodle is fantastic machines. gah, haven't had much time to spare so i took forever to actually get around to doing anything for it... and in the end, all i've got to show for myself is a poor man's rocketeer...

OH WELL, WHAT THE HELL.

going to slap so colours on this sometime soon so watch this space. got five million other things i want to do for this and all the other topics but goddamn, there are never going to be enough hours in the day.

life drawing book! oh my god. everyone should get their friends together and try the big group drawing thing. so. much. fun. you also get the wackiest results.

in other news, currently stumbled across the violent femmes on the old spotify. i know i'm probably stupidly late to the party but DAMN, they're good.

more prep for the russian piece. the stereotypical russians are being thrown out in favour of big, fat, burly bears. i'm waiting for the yay or nay on some stuff for the anthology so hopfully i can finish on the pencils for this today (it's a pretty massive drawing... like a2? lord knows WHY i'm doing it this big because i'm going to colour it digitally and printing it at that size is going to be a bitch/expensive. oh alex. one day you'll learn to think things through.)

in other news, it's really, really hot.

and we're back to the preachy little book of life drawing. practice it, sister!

a wee peak at the stuff i'm doing for zee anthology. werwolves+victorian silliness= MUCHO FUN. inking this page at the moment. should get it licked today, fingers crossed...
....
oh alex. your optimism never fails to amuse me.

moar from the life drawing book! ugh. i made the fatal mistake of not scanning these drawings as we went through the year. needless to say, after 6 or so hours of scanning/photoshop compositing fun, i have so totally learnt my lesson.

homework! over the summer we need to mail our second year tutor bits and bobs that illustrate what we've been getting up to. first thing i'm going to try and get licked for this is a super, giant drawing of moscow. there were plans to go out there and hook up with a buddy who's living out in the ukraine for a year (damn that jess is hardcore) but, being totally lame, i had to bail semi last minuet and the whole thing kinda-sorta imploded.

shame on me.

anyhoo, some moleskin pages trying to get to grips with moscow-nian land marks/ architecture.

and we're back on the life drawing book. man, i should have taken a picture of that thing; the binding job on it was ASSSSS-TTTAAAASSSSTIC. by the time i was through, it was literally an aborted mess of uhu.

every time i bind a book, martin ursell dies a little more inside.

managed to drop a bottle of water on the first drawing on page 4. what a pisser, although i'm kinda digging that explosive effect. note to self: explore charcoal + water. could be interesting?

stuff for the doodle caboodle. when i grow up, i would very much like to be shit hot at the ukulele. i'm pretty musically challenged though so it's probably never going to happen.

drew this one while listening to kings of leon's king of the rodeo and the bucket. ALOT.

man, those are some super fun songs. the picture was done was done with sharpened coffee stirrers. i'm a bit shit at playing with line texture and the stuff i do with pens always ends up looking super duper clean (BOOOOOORRRRRRIIIINNNNNGGGG). note to self: think about experimenting with brush pens (looking at fabio moon and francis manapul's stuff always gets me super psyched about dabbling with those things. GO CHECK THOSE CATS OUT. THEY'RE PRETTY SICK).

OH GOD! I LOVE UKULELES.

more from the life drawing book. godDAMN do i love doing those quick fire drawings. i'm not the fastest person in the west at this art malarkey, so having to bang out a figure in 3 minuets or whatever is. so. refreshing. it also means you have to boil things down to their vitals which i find often results in a way more expressive figure. this year has also made me think about mark making. alot.

BLAH BLAH BLAH.

something for our group art blog, the doodle caboodle ( http://thedoodlecaboodle.blogspot.com/ ). you should check it out! some people are doing some super fly stuff for it. if you'd like to become a contributor, just give me a shout and i'll add you as a contributor. the more the merrier!

for the 'when i grow up, i want to be a _________' theme. yeah... i put ALOT of imagination into this one.

so to cap off the life drawing module we had to make a book about all the things we've done/ learnt over the year. i think it's meant to be more like a rather long note-to-self so we don't come back after summer and fall straight back into bad habits. probably the best way to get around that particular pitfall is to find somewhere that runs sessions but oh my god, those things can cost a pretty penny. does anyone out there know of any good, cheap places?

here we have the lovely cover and page 1 which is all about how to limber up.

damn i'm going to miss the weekly dose of doodling naked people.

some character designs for the never-ending animation project. do mimes count as carnival folk?

Sunday, 9 May 2010

currently in the process of putting a book together for our life drawing module. this is one little doodle that isn't going to make it in, but i really kinda like it for some reason...

looks like someone's about to get an eye poking.

old, old news. some rough stuff for the new york article brief from way back when. mmm, i quite like that lo-res, discoloured effect you get from scanning printed images... something to look into? JA JA JA!

god, that reflection in the floor idea haunted me something awful. totally a case of thinking an idea is super pimp and being waaaaaaaaay too stubborn to see that actually, it sucks balls. i've got a tighter version sitting on my desktop that i've been meaning to finish but fuck that. it's going on a one way trip to the trash right.... NOW!

HOORAY FOR ARTISTIC EXORCISM!

whoar. it's not even funny how long this ended up taking, which is crazy since it's flat colours and it's not like it's hyper detailed. hrm. don't know how well the two pages work together either. page 01 feels waaaaaaaaaaaaaay busier and lets not get started on the super DIY lettering.

still, i'm kinda happy with how it turned out. BRING ON THE ROAST!

aaaaaand that's that for the character designs, now with 100% more werewolf. dosen't that make a fun change to silly facial hair, high waisted trousers and impractical dresses?

back to the victorian sillyness and some leftovers from editing issue 2 of turning tiger. gah, so bummed that the anthology piece has been relegated to twiddling its thumbs on the back burner, but there just hasn't been time. jordan has been super cool about uni being a big fat time whore but things are starting to wined down on that front as we come to THE END (pt 1.) so hopefully i'll be able to finish the layouts this weekend. on the 21st, i'm going up to ->

see you there?

the naked pages for the comic book project. currently slapping a dash of colour on them but i'm not super optimistic as to how it's all going to turn out. gah, i really, REALLY wish i'd taken this as a chances to be more experimental in terms of style (after the memory project, i was super psyched about maybe getting to mix the inks up with some acrylics but... i don't know, i guess i pussied out and told myself this story wouldn't suit that) BUT OH WELL.

MY MY MY. ME THINK SOMEONE'S BEING A BIT OF A NEGATIVE NANCY TODAY.

just some doodles done trying to come up with a look for the comic book project. as you can see, the amount of experimentation and exploration of all the possible routes this could have gone down is MIND BLOWING.

hmmm... i think the whole drawing straight with pen thing is something that most deffinatly needs to be explored.

submission for the upcoming meow. this time round the theme's dislike, and what could possibly be less kosher than funky cooking?

going to cross post this to doodle caboodle for the food stuff theme even though there's 101 things that could be done for the shinny, new topic.... DAMN YOU TIME! WHY MUST YOU BE SO DAMN ELUSIVE!??!
